Blood – a very short Introduction

12.12.2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

“Blood – a very short introduction” will explore blood’s fascinating historical role in culture and religion, blood’s many uses in biology and medical sciences, explain how blood functions and the different components contained in blood – and explore recent efforts to replace it with “artificial blood”.

The presenter, Professor Cooper (Emeritus Professor at the University of Essex, Honorary Professor at University College London), is a recognized/leading expert in biomedical applications of spectroscopy (especially electron paramagnetic resonance and near-infrared vibrational spectroscopy), with a focus on those connected with heme proteins and especially globins, within the fields of oxygen-binding/transporting proteins, blood substitutes and sports science. His scientific publications have been cited ~20,000 times. Professor Cooper is also known for his involvement in bridging the gap between science and society, as a public communicator with well-received appearances in mass-media. His book on the topic of the presentation at UBB, “Blood – a very short introduction”, has appeared at Oxford University Press in a series (Very Short Introductions) that has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
